영남대학교 사회학과는 1980년에 설립되었다. 학부과정에 이어 1990년에는 대학원 석사학위과정이, 그리고 2000년에는 대학원 박사학위과정이 개설되었다. 본 학과의 교육목표는 영남대학교의 창학정신에 바탕을 두고 지도자적 자질과 사회과학적 전문지식을 갖춘 인재를 양성하고 배출하여 사회 각 분야에서 필요로 하는 중견 지도자로서 활동할 수 있게 함으로써 지역사회와 국가의 발전에 기여하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 현실사회의 다양한 현상을 독자적으로 조사 및 연구할 수 있도록 훈련시켜, 사회현상을 객관적이고 심층적으로 분석하고 현실 사회문제에 대한 정책적 대안을 제시할 수 있는 식견과 능력을 배양한다. 특히 국내 각 기업이나 관공서뿐만 아니라 중등교육기관, 연구기관, 금융, 언론, 방송, 광고 분야 등에서 교육, 기획, 조사, 연구, 광고, 마케팅 등의 업무를 책임지고 수행하며, 정보화와 세계화, 지역화와 같은 급격한 사회변화에 적극적으로 대응할 수 있는 창의적이고도 실용적인 문제 해 능력을 배양하는 데 주력한다.

Introduction

The Department of sociology at Yeungnam University was established in 1980. Following the undergraduate program, a graduate master's degree program was established in 1990, and a graduate Ph.D. program was established in 2000.
The educational goal of this department is to contribute to the development of local communities and countries by nurturing and producing talented people with leadership qualities and social science expertise based on the founding spirit of Yeungnam University. To this end, we will train them to independently investigate and study various phenomena in the real world to develop their knowledge and ability to objectively and in-depth analysis of social phenomena and present policy alternatives to real social problems. In particular, they will be responsible for education, planning, research, research, advertising, and marketing in secondary education institutions, research institutes, finance, media, broadcasting, and advertising as well as domestic companies and government offices, and focus on cultivating creative and practical problem-solving skills to actively respond to rapid social changes such as informatization, globalization, and localization.
